Born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Ian got his start as a songwriter while attending UCCB in Sydney, NS where there was always a coffee house to play. Like many Maritimers before him, Ian moved west to Calgary in the late 80s looking for a change - or something better.
He found it and as other emigrants, also found that in moving away he discovered the importance of his roots, his history and the effects of the landscape of the Maritimes. He speaks to those things in his music. The emotion and honesty of his songs are common to all and will move you, no matter where you come from. He is a maritimer, but the call of the west gives him a unique perspective and a distinct point of view.
Ian has a pure energy that envelops the listener and allows a sincere connection. His sense of realistic optimism and absolute humanness shines through in his songs. With the release of his CD Holding Shadows, Ian has emerged as one of the finest songwriters to come out of the Calgary folk community.
